Dare you make it?

By Ilyas Aroui. Ilyas is 18 years old. He is a student at Abdelhamid Kabbatti school. He lives in Oued Rhiou, Algeria.

“Study just to find a job and get a livelihood, raise a family and die” Is that the real life we wanted? Does it make it worth to breath every second?

Mark Twain says “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Have you ever asked yourself the question: “Why was I born? ” Have you ever been thinking about the purpose of this life? The main question is: “Have you ever attempted to carve and set your inner angel free? “. Words from gold written by Michelangelo the known Italian sculptor; and what a suffix given to his name! Shudder prevailed my body realizing the meaning of the quote that is “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

Every human is carrying a burden on his shoulders, debts that must be paid off and a personal promise that has to be done; in other words, everyone among us has a dream and goals in this life where he strives to attain them: “A man without goals is like a train without a railroad.” You can see the angel but you cannot set him free because you cannot start carving, you don’t have enough faith and the potential inwardly to work on your dreams. You have the apprehension of failure: “What if I can’t do it” and the fear of success: “What if I cannot deal with it”. Most of us pretend that they have a target that they want to achieve, but no one wants to succeed as bad as he wants to breathe!

Greatness is not that wonderful and esoteric gift that only the special among us will ever taste; it’s something that truly exists in all of us. It merely needs persistence and determination to be pushed and a rigid heart that is ready to toil. And as the ancestors said: “You will never know the pain of a burning coal until you touch it”.

Three years ago, on a Monday morning, I decided to free myself from the rein and follow my desires to get in the kick-boxing gym which I had always dreamed of; nonetheless, something was always hampering and confining my decision. It was a rough time at the beginning, I incurred a lot of impediments, and I would say the worst time in my life was the training period. However, hard moments come to pass not to stay. I was training four times a week after school; six months later the tournament of ring wrestles showed up. The coach selected me as he saw my diligence and insistence over the season. The opponent was the real dystopia as he was an experienced known athlete in the gym. I tried to hone my mind and take the fight, conceptualizing that no matter how bad it is or how exertion it takes I’ll make it. the two first round, I coped with his attacks, but in the third one I got hit in the head which was approximately a knock-out; I was choking falling apart on both my knees, I was thinking about giving up, but something internally was telling me “Don’t let this inept steal your dream”.

A breeze blew me in the whole body, the coach kept yelling “It’s not about how much you hit it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep standing up.” I can hear the clatter of my sweat, I can hear the echo of my fear from afar, the gleam of my dream’s hope was turning off again and again ; simply, I was taking the pain of carving the angel. At an instance I felt compelled to obliterate and bury my hallucination and take heart to flick on the light; I gasped, stood up firmly and continued the fight with an over-confidence which conveyed a winning at the end.

You may be wondering! I’m a student, but it’s my passion to put on gloves and feel the taste of the judge raising my hand at the end of the fight. It’s something that needs an individual comprehension; maybe you don’t like kick-boxing maybe you don’t enjoy sports at all but don’t you dare say that you have no dream to protect.

I wrote the latter story in order to derive that pain is temporary, it may last a minute, an hour, a day or even a year, but one day it will erode and something will take its place, something that we both know it; it’s the freedom of the angel. We have to look at the mirror and scream at ourselves saying: It’s never too late, stop nodding your head and succumbing to others’ life, stop analysing people’s life and desiring to be just like them, stop emulating them, I bet that you don’t know yourself, you have no idea how to define your values, you have to invest in you.

You have to become the person that you were created to be and do what makes you happy no matter how crazy it sounds to other people. You must free your mind like John Lennon said “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans”.

I conclude my modest piece by saying that we have to die clean, we have to leave no dream behind us and pay off our debts and bills; the debts that have been given to us at the beginning. We have to carve the angel as hard as we can, and if you think it’s not late to do so, grab an oar and sail to your goals.

This is great, the fact that youth in this age are thinking in such a good way is what all youth and students are needed to do, because they are the change makers and the rising elites of their societies.
I think that this message should be spread widely to reach the ones who are willing to make the world a better place and I believe that this was the fruit of passion and hardworking.

Nice introduction! I liked how you grasp the quote of Michelangelo, I mean each one could have a vision toward it, but yours was quite in the point. We should keep going no matter how bad we take.
