Metropolitan Church Education Centre, community organisation, Nairobi County, Kenya, 2011, edu.mcec.ke@gmail.com
“Metropolitan Church Education Centre was established in 2011 with one child and one teacher. It is registered as a community-based organisation located in the Kawangware slums, Nairobi county, Kenya. The Centre was set up out of empathy of the young children’s’ plight of illiteracy and the loitering caused by lack of funds for school admittance. Mrs Rhodah Mutende, who is a qualified teacher and the Director of the Centre, noticed that these children were coming to Sunday school at the Metropolitan Christian church and therefore, with the help of the church and her own contribution, set up this learning centre.
Metropolitan Church Education Centre provides basic education to disadvantaged children from poor backgrounds. Most of the needs of the children, including books and tuition fees, are provided for through the Director’s own donations and contributions. The establishment of the school is premised on the fact that all the children within the Kawangware settlement have the right to education and the right to live in a secure, dignified and humane environment. The Centre has expanded in capacity since 2011, now providing education to over 350 between the ages of 4 and 14. The Centre’s main objectives include teaching basic literacy skills to 600 children by 2015.”
