There is in our civilization a great deal of ignorance about the human condition. The more ignorant a society is the more of its people suffer hatred. Each human being is an integral part of the collective whole. They affect the world much more deeply than is seen on the surface. Human beings are not separate but interwoven. In this sense, “La haine attire la haine” (hate attracts hate)-from La Haine, dir. Matthieu Kassovitz, may actually be interwoven people experiencing a common influence. Information from society such as radio, television and movies, politics and religion, newspapers and magazines, teachers, parents and peers are known as influences. These influences have a way of determining our emotions. When a person reacts in hatred every influence in their mind determines the reaction to be as such. People with similar influences attract each other. We recognize ourselves in others and like-minded people tend to gather. We are all brothers and sisters. We are free to let go of hatred the moment we recognize it as ignorant. Negativity is not intelligent. Intelligence sees the larger whole in which all things and beings are connected. We are connected as one human family. “Hate attracts hate” because of those connections.
Hate is a primitive way in which people attempt to assert themselves, to prove themselves right and another wrong. “Hate attracts hate” in this regard because people whose values and opinions are based on being right through hatred are supported by others who share their view. There is a sense of belonging and attraction when your ideas are held true by others. People listen to hate speeches and belong to hate groups because it validates their thoughts on the subject. The acceptance depends on a common bond, hate.
Many people are confused about where they fit in, what their purpose is and even who they are. “Hate attracts hate” for those who don’t fit in, have no purpose and haven’t discovered who they are. During hate rallies there are strong identities and a social order that is being questioned. The differences are based on ignorance, false pride and ego. We must focus on common values that are held by loving people. Freedom, equality and the dream of a more loving world.
Those awakened into the dream were met by those who suffered personal dysfunction (hate) that led them to anger, jealousy and violence. Many peace leaders are victims of such violence and hatred. They become martyrs. These leaders had awakened whole generations to the dream. They dreamed of a more loving world for all people. The movement was based on powerful ideas essential to ending conflict, hatred, and suffering throughout the world. Love and peace were the result. Love and peace are how we can change the world. “Hate attracts hate” yet sometimes love and peace attract hate also.
The urgent need of our time is the transformation of consciousness and the arising of a more enlightened humanity. Resistance to hate is the key to the greatest power in the universe according to most peace leaders. When the world woke up and the evening’s dream ended we said, “It was only a dream. It wasn’t real.” But something in the dream must’ve been real otherwise the love could not be. There is the dream, and there is the dreamer of the dream. To awaken within the dream is our purpose now. There will be quality and power in it. We share that purpose with all other people on Earth. It is the purpose of humanity. “Hate attracts hate” but “Love attracts love”.
We all need to be understood and loved. The way to achieve this is not to expect understanding and love. Don’t complain when no one seems to love or understand you. Just try to make an effort to love and understand them even more. “Hate attracts hate” when individuals’ experiences, lack of love and understanding turn them to contempt. It is easy to hate and attract hate when your angry about not being understood or loved.
If someone in your life hates you, ask why. If you feel the responsibility lies entirely with them, look more deeply. Perhaps you have watered the seeds of hate yourself. We are all co-responsible. The situation will only get worse if you hold onto bitter blame. Apply the mind, concentrate and use good judgment and you’ll probably discover that what makes them happy also makes you happy. Find a way to transform the situation and realize peace. Take good care of the happiness of everyone around you. Enjoy smiling and shining the light of mindfulness on each thing you do. Practice transformation in your mind through looking deeply and feeling deeply about hate and suffering. The way of transformation and healing is very deep. Choose kindness, love and compassion for everyone in your life and realize this for yourself also. It can be practiced every day. Use this method to alleviate suffering from hatred and the suffering of others. This gives us much meaning to our lives and we won’t attract hate. I am confident that we can do it and, by doing so, end hate for a new age of peace, love, and understanding -resulting in the betterment of humankind.
Very well put to paper, Well thought out, if only more of us including myself would practice this more often. Things could possibly start to change. Good food for thought.
