For the third edition of the NUHA Blogging Prizes, 63 articles were published from 18 different countries -- and the articles were viewed over 13,000 times by people connecting from 172 countries the world over! Three prizes were on offer:
- Young Writers Prize, for those born between 1998 and 2002: £50
- Youth Prize, for those born between 1994 and 1997: £100
- Adult Prize, for those born before 1994: £150 (1st prize) and £90 (2nd prize)
for authors who responded to one of the statements below:
Young writers
- Why do grown-ups read fairy tales?
- In the future, will children still use pencils?
- "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." by Albert Einstein. Do you agree? Why?
Youth
- Myths, legends and fantasies: why do we read them, why do we watch them?
- "To be or not to be..." Is that what school is about?
- "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." Attributed to WB Yeats. Do you agree? Why?
Adult
- If there was one thing you could change to improve education in your country, what would it be and why?
- In an era of tight public finances, should students be entitled to subsidised higher education no matter what they choose to study?
- "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." (Anonymous quote.) Discuss.
The winners in the Youth and Adult categories were announced on 10 December 2013 by our experienced Jury, which was "impressed by the vibrant ideas and energy that came across in the articles and comments". For the Young Writers category, it was decided that all five published authors deserved recognition rather than to award a prize, and they each received a book.
